How much extra tile should I order?
Order 10% extra for straight-lay patterns and 15% extra for diagonal or complex patterns to account for cuts and breakage. This calculator defaults to 10%.
How do I calculate the square footage of a room for tiling?
Multiply length by width. For L-shaped rooms, break the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add them. Subtract for cabinets, islands, or fixtures that will not be tiled.
How many 12×12 tiles do I need per square foot?
Exactly 1 tile per square foot. So a 100 sq ft bathroom needs 100 base tiles plus 10% overage = 110 tiles.
What is the easiest tile size to install?
12×12 and 18×18 tiles are easiest to cut and align. Smaller mosaic tiles require more grout lines and more time. Large-format tiles (24×24+) require a perfectly level subfloor.
Can I use the same calculator for wall tiles and floor tiles?
